Seeking a horse-and-rider feeling of unity between people and robots

This is a transport robot that helps with the work of gathering ordered products in warehouses. When I saw the previous robot product working on site, my first feeling was that it was “an admirable and cute thing.” Even though as a robot that does not have eyes or mouth like a person, its synchronization with workers was perfect. I became engrossed in watching the combination of people and robots working at incredible speed. During the design and development process, I gained numerous insights by listening to the thoughts of laborers who work on site and observing work environments. From these, I devised a form that would provide temporary storage space to increase work efficiency and that would prevent the feet of workers from contacting the robot. I am filled with delight when I see the delivered robot being called, “this kid,” and working energetically. I am already beginning to search for ideas, thinking “how would this kind of form be for other things?”

I like bicycles, and think saying they are extensions of my body is not an overstatement. I go by bicycle even to a convenience store that is fifty meters from my home. This year I rode my bicycle to enjoy the Setouchi Triennale. I have ideas frequently when I am riding. But, I forget them quickly! (Laughs.)
