Do you know the precision in millimeters used when designing smartphones? Is the precision one millimeter? No, it is 0.001 millimeter. In other words, 1/1000 of a millimeter. Design is always a fight with dimensions. The smallest numerical value can greatly change the appearance of a design. I focused special attention on the curve line of the frame in the design of the R2. Along with a good feel in the hand, to the eye this curve creates a sense of softness with just the right amount of tension. But, this curve was really a mind-bender. With the ideal curve, the area was insufficient so the main circuit board would not fit! At first, it made me want to give up. After fighting many 1/1000 of a millimeter battles in cooperation with others involved, however, we were able to realize an ideal curve. This story about our struggle, though, is really not important. If people who hold this smartphone in their hands feel the line is attractive, that is enough. Then, if people like it, that is all I need to be happy. It is pretty simple. This is how I can move on to the next design.
Perhaps it is because I am always doing this kind of precise design, but on my days off I like to enjoy easy strolls with a camera in one hand. I like taking pictures of cats and wild birds. Looking at birds, they have very fine and attractive forms… There I go again. I unintentionally observe small details. This is also in the nature of the designer.
