Caring about cleanliness

An abundance of technologies related to “cleanliness” is a strength of Sharp washing machines. More than just washing capabilities, these include Plasmacluster ion use and drums without holes. I expressed these fantastic strengths directly in the design. I sought to create washing machines that would make the spaces where the machines are placed beautiful, brightening the moods of the people who use them and making these users want to always keep them clean. My main push was the half-mirrored glass appearance. I examined many prototypes to achieve both the beauty of mirrored reflections and the transparency to see inside. Please take a close look at it! By printing fine dots with varied density on the vertical surface glass, I controlled the reflection rate of the mirrored surface, which decreases from top to bottom. I stayed many days at the production site in China, going through trial and error to achieve this. With the cooperation of enthusiastic technicians, in addition to the existing appeal of the half-mirrored material, we were able to realize an even richer appearance.

I like handicrafts, so I often go to see Japan Traditional Kōgei Exhibition. I keep something like a sketch diary for when I encounter works that move me with surprising beauty. This “aesthetic notebook” in my own style is a treasure trove of ideas for creating beauty.
